THE CARIBBEAN IS BEING INVADED
.
AFFECTED AREA
Climate change caused an unprecedented blooming of sargassum, 20 million tons of sargassum is drifting around the Caribbean sea. To put it into perspective, the area it covers equals the size of the United States.
In the Caribbean it threatens the economies, the livelihoods and the ecosystems, by invading the beaches, killing marine life and destroying businesses.
Most of the Caribbean countries' economy is based on tourism and fisheries, and to deal with the problem they need to take from budgets needed for other purposes, like health and education.
In Cancun alone, tourism fell 35% during 2018.
